We set traps for small mammals on several evenings in August.
Two types of trap were tried, well stocked with bedding and food - including grass,
hazelnuts and blackberries from the site. These included transparent plastic and aluminium
boxes, with trap doors with a simple trip mechanism.
The traps were visited the following morning. About half of them caught mice, varying with the location. So far no other mammals have been caught.
The mice caught all appear to be wood mice (long-tailed field mice). Some were a darker colour,
possibly juveniles. They were not at all easy to photograph. After a quick look they were
released back into the grass.
